Jodo - Silence of Movement
Jodo - Silence of Movement is a performance based on collaboration between Japanese calligrapher Yukina Yamamoto, performance artist Tuuli Malla and artist Mari Mäkiö.
Starting point for the performance have been the japanese characters ‘jodo’ 静動 which describe silence and movement. We have interpreted ‘jodo’ through calligraphy, movement and sound - exploring together what kind of stillness and movement arise from writing the characters. Because Malla and Mäkiö are new to Japanese calligraphy, the interpretations are a combination of Yamamoto’s indepth skill and lingering with the unknown.
Yukina Yamamoto is a Japanese calligraphy artist based in Jyväskylä. She has studied the skill of calligraphy for over 20 years. Tuuli Malla is a performer and installation artist who works site specifically and is inspired by Butoh dance.
The performance has been shown at Turun Taidehalli as part of Mäkiö’s exhibition Kagekiyodo, Helsinki Butoh Festival 2020 and Jyväskylä Butoh Festival 2021.
